“It all began when Floyd got his kite stuck in a tree”!

This hilarious picture book by well-loved children’s author-illustrator Oliver Jeffers is a story of “determination and inventiveness”. When Floyd’s kite gets stuck in a tree, he tries to tug it loose, but it won’t budge. Time after time Floyd tries to knock it loose, but everything he tries ends him deeper in trouble, and eventually he forgets all about his kite.

Oliver captures the thinking processes of a child in such a beautiful manner – Floyd keeps repeating the same approach to try to solve his problem but it only adds to the mess (the type of flawed logic a child possesses)!

In the end his kite is free, and as children often do, Floyd gets distracted by it and forgets all about the rest.

It is a great, engaging story for discussion, prediction, hypothetical problem solving and critical thinking, but the best is that this book cannot but leave the reader in stitches!

Stuck was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year and the Galaxy Book Awards Children’s Book of the Year in 2012.

Oliver Jeffers is one of our Book Club’s favourite authors, and some of his books in our library include The Day the Crayons Quit (which he illustrated), The heart and the bottle, The incredible book-eating boy, This moose belongs to me and How to catch a star.
