Kids Book Club Meeting 15 September 2018

It was a lovely, hot summer’s day at our Kids Book Club meeting today! Quite a large group of our members gathered to listen to Leigh, our hostess, read two stories and interact with the kids. The kids learned first of all that writing a book of their own doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use a lot of words, but if you have good illustrations, minimal words are necessary. They were quite intrigued by this!

The first story Leigh read is called I am a bunny by Ole Risom, Illustrated by Richard Scarry (ISBN: 9780375827785).

Nicholas the bunny, who celebrates the seasons as they go by, takes things as they come. In the spring, Nicholas likes to sniff the flowers, and in the summer, watch the frogs in the pond. In the fall, he watches the animals getting ready for winter, and in winter, watches the snow falling from the sky! It is a beautifully illustrated board book for little readers learning about the seasons.

You can view a reading of I am a bunny here:

The second story, however, was about a boy named Charlie, who worries a lot and prepares well for those “What if’s?” in life. What if it’s raining very hard – so hard that rain could come into the house and make the furniture float? Charlie has a plan to keep himself dry…just in case. What if his parents are going out and he gets a babysitter who won’t read to him or let him watch TV? Charlie has a plan for making his own fun…just in case. But as Charlie is about to find out, sometimes not being ready is even better (~Amazon).

Judith Viorst’s text in this picture book engages kids, and entices them to finish the chorus after every one of Charlie’s ideas “…just in case” (Just in Case, ISBN: 9781442412828).

Judith Viorst is also the author of the well-known Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and its sequels, available to our Book Club members!

Our next (second last for the year) Book Club meeting is on 13 October 2018. Until then,

Happy Reading!
