Greg’s Microscope by Millicent E Selsam

Greg's MicroscopeISBN: 9780064441445

Greg wants to see tiny things and asks his dad for a microscope. His dad doesn’t quite understand what it really is that Greg wants to be able to see. Greg says that his friend Billy can see the hairs on a spider’s foot and the hooks in a bird’s feather.

Eventually Greg’s dad buys him a microscope. Greg has to find his own “tiny things” to look at, which sets the whole family off on an adventure in finding and looking at tiny things, and the things they find are beautifully illustrated to show readers what Greg saw under the microscope’s lens.

It is a wonderful living book to introduce little ones to the use of a microscope. It describes the components of the microscope, using microscope terminology like “cover glass” and “glass slides”, and it even describes and discusses the packaging and price of a microscope.

Greg learns about crystallization, and animal and plant cells, and this information is carried over to the reader in a very interesting and fun read.

Greg realizes that one microscope is not enough for his family!
