Book Club Meeting 26 May 2018

At our Book Club meeting today, we once again had a lot of fun!

After the get-to-know-one-another song, Leigh read two engaging stories to the kids – the first of which (in anticipation of the arrival of Baby Alvin) was Ten little fingers and Ten little toes by Mem Fox (ISBN: 9780547366203), a celebration of baby fingers and baby toes, and the joy they (and their owners) bring to everyone, everywhere, all over the world; And which, with its rhythmic, rhyming text, can’t otherwise but draw kids in to participate to finish the chorus on every other page about babies who have “Ten little fingers and Ten little toes!” when read out loud to them. A wonderful gift to a mommy-to-be, and a wonderful gift to a baby from his or her mommy!

(or you can listen to Mem Fox’s personal version of her story):

The second story Leigh read was Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts (ISBN:9780763642846), which is a Kindness Book that teaches that there are more important things than following the latest fad, and it has a very powerful message that teaches children about selflessly giving to others. The story is one kids can relate to, and it leaves room for discussion about how to be considerate and mindful about the financial position of others who may not be as fortunate.

Everybody knows what it feels like to desire something that you can’t necessarily afford. Jeremy learns a valuable lesson when he goes with his Gran to find him those shoes everybody at school seems to be wearing – everybody except him, that is – determined also to have a pair. Jeremy realises that there are things he already has that are more worth than the things he wants.

A wonderful picture book that speaks to children of all ages, and even to adults!

Our next meeting will be on July 21st 2018.

Happy Reading until then!
