Harry and Hope by Sarah Lean

A heartwarming, rather touching, story about a 12-year old girl whose world seems to fall apart … With an artist for a mother, who hides in her studio all day and night, she grows attached to Frank with whom she can communicate and share things. But one day Frank leaves to correct what he felt was a wrong, and all he leaves behind is his stubborn donkey, Harry.

Some kids at this age really do struggle to say what’s really on their mind. Those kids can identify with Hope, who has trouble communicating how she feels, especially to her detached mother. After Frank leaves, Marianne reconnects with her daughter when she realizes how absent she’d been and giving Hope only what she wanted, not what Hope needed.

This story has a setting in a vineyard community in the Pyrenees Mountains in France, and has an important message about open communication, persistence, and unconditional love.

It is an easy read, well written, keeping the thread of the story throughout the book.
