Katherine Applegate Mini Bio

Katherine Applegate is an American young adult and children’s fiction writer, who has written many books, including The Buffalo Storm (a picture book), Roscoe Riley Rules (a chapter book series), and the award-winning novel, Home of the Brave (2008 Golden Kite Award for Best Fiction, the Bank Street 2008 Josette Frank Award for children’s fiction, and it was a Judy Lopez Memorial Award honor book). Animorphs, which she wrote with her husband, Michael Grant, has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.

Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the “Shopping Mall Gorilla”. This novel was awarded the John Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.
