Insect of the week

insect-of-the-weekAnother topic for our Daily Learning Time is Insect of the week.

I created some Display Cards for our Notice Board, to learn a bit about the insects that crawl, jump or fly into our house, and for drawing practice.

I bought the Field Guide to Insects of South Africa and divided the introductory information in the beginning of the book into bite-sized fragments to learn about the importance of insects, the anatomy of insects (we already covered this in Grade 1 when we did the Apologia Science Book Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day, but it is a good reminder), how they grow, insect classification, distribution patterns, where to look and how to collect insects.

I also created a section in our Daily Learning Ringbinder for the Insect of the Week, where he can paste the display card onto the top half of a clean sheet of paper, leaving the bottom half untouched. When we have our drawing time, he will use the bottom half to copy the insect from the photo (just remember to let him add the date!)
