Book Club Meeting 20 July 2019

Today at our (very windy) July Kids Book Club Meeting, our theme was character, and we had two lovely stories that engaged the kids a great deal.

I want my hat back by Jon KlassenThe first story we read was a charmingly wicked picture book called I want my hat back by Canadian author/illustrator Jon Klassen (ISBN: 9781406338539) – a wonderfully engaging, amusing and fun read-aloud!

Bear announces that he can’t find his hat, and that he would really love it back. He sets off through the woods and questions all the animals, but no-one has seen his hat. Just as he thinks he’ll never find it, a deer asks a simple question that sparks his memory – he HAS seen his hat! With a vengeance he jumps to retrieve it. It is quite hilarious how he resolves this issue!

It is a straight-forward story, written completely in dialogue, but includes a mischievous twist, letting the reader in on the joke!

Pierre by Maurice SendakOur second story, read by Meghann and Cadeyrn Cox, was a lilting, witty story by American children’s author/illustrator Maurice SendakPierre, a cautionary tale in Five Chapters (ISBN: 9780062854421) – a classic children’s story about Pierre, a boy with a bit of an attitude problem. His only response to everything his parents say to him is “I don’t care”, and he continues doing just what he wants. Until one day, because he “doesn’t care”, he is swallowed by a lion, and he quickly changes his mind!
