A Boy and a Jaguar

World Wildlife Day 2019

Today’s Book Club Hour at Thorntree Preparatory School was all about World Wildlife Day.

Discussion topics included

  • what wildlife is
  • why a day would be dedicated to wildlife
  • why many plant and animal species are endangered (causes)
  • big cats as the focus of this year (2019)’s wildlife
  • feeling ignored, misunderstood or hurt
  • stuttering
  • zoology
  • conservation and what you can do to help conservation of plants and animals
  • using your weakness to become your strength
  • critical thinking – Thinking Flexibly (HOM 4) – what does it mean?
  • how to think flexibly

The book that told a beautiful real-life story about animal conservation and thinking flexibly, was A Boy and a Jaguar by Alan Rabinowitz. Alan was an American Zoologist who used his “weakness” – stuttering – to follow his passion to protect and fight for the protection of Big Cats. He was the co-founder of the Panthera Corporation, a non-profit conservation organization devoted to protecting the world’s 40 wild cat species.

A Boy and a Jaguar is a book of hope, showing kids that a “weakness” doesn’t necessarily mean you are broken or useless, but can still achieve great things in life.
