Lynne Rae Perkins Mini Bio

Lynne Rae Perkins is an American author/illustrator of children’s books, who didn’t start out her adult life as writer. Even though she had studied art, her life took her through many different twists and turns, and her occupations ranged from framing pictures, teaching drawing and watercolour classes, and working as cashier at a grocery store, to waitressing, graphics design, and growing Christmas trees.

Only later (in 1993), while visiting a conference organized by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, did she show her drawings and paintings to the art director. After receiving positive feedback about it, Lynne wrote her first story, much actually only to accompany her drawings she’d been keeping herself busy with, but then her story was published (Home Lovely)!

In 2006, she was awarded the Newbery Medal Award (the highest honour awarded for a children’s book text in the US) for her novel Criss Cross. Snow Music, was also a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Book and a Book Sense Top Ten Pick.
